Getting ready for Fall 2011

At the end of the Spring 2011, I took an inventory of all the classes I still needed to complete and tried to figure out if there was a way I could graduate in Spring 2013.  I determined that even if I took three classes every semester, that would get me to Fall 2013 and they don't offer my final practicum class in the Fall.  UH-Maui College does not offer any of the classes I need during the Summer so I'm more limited now that I'm an upper classman.  So I've decided that if I take two classes every semester, with the exception of one semester where I'll need to add three classes, and the final semester which the school recommends that students take in the last semester by itself, I'm looking at graduating in Spring 2014.  This means that from start to finish, I will have taken me seven years to complet my Bachelors where it takes most students four years.

I've resigned myself to this.  My rationale is that the classes are getting harder and more demanding, taking only two classes will allow me to concentrate more on the homework that I'll need to complete.  This also means that my Summers will be free so I can actually plan to take some real vacation time.

That's exactly what I'm planning to do at the end of Spring 2012.  I'm planning a trip to Washington, DC; Lancaster, PA; and Pennsylvania, PA.  It will be nice to travel and not have to worry about making sure I complete an assignment while I'm on the road.

Spring 2011 Semester

Well, I did pretty well in the Spring 2011 Semester.  I took BUS320 which meant that for our final project we had to write up a business plan for a fictitious but possible new business.  BUS320 at Maui College is all about Entrepreneurship and how to build a business and the planning involved from conception to grand opening.  I also took ICS 385 Electronic Commerce.  It was similar to BUS320 in that our final project there also stemmed around building your own business.  However, in this class it was all about what is involved in giving that business a global presence by being on the internet.  So in this class we had to build a website and make sure that it had all the more common things present such as information about the company, the people, the product, and of course the links to Facebook, Twitter and LinkedIn.  My last class in Spring 2011 was COM459 Intercultural Communication II - WI.  This involved understanding different cultures that we might encounter while conducting business globally.  It was more than just understanding the culture but accepting the differences that make other cultures unique.

That was my semester.  Three courses, one online and two on campus.  The two on campus classes were both three hour classes, one on Tuesday from 12:00pm to 3:00pm and the other on Thursday from 6:00pm to 9:00pm.  Spring 2011 semester was harder than most of my other semesters.  I'm thinking that's because the work is getting harder and demands more time to complete.  All three classes required a final project/presentation at the end.  I think the hardest was trying to do group work.  While I enjoyed working with everyone, it was hard to try and get everybody together and on the same page.  I think Spring 2011 was my most difficult semesters so far.

Journey to my BAS

My journey to attain my Bachelors of Applied Science in Applied Business and Information Technology from the University of Hawaii - Maui College began in the Spring of 2007.  At the time, I was content with just going to work and coming home, but something was stirring inside me.  I was feeling a little restless.  I wasn't learning.  I wasn't growing.  So when my life partner read the little add in the Maui News about the then Maui Community College offering a four-year college degree in Applied Business and Information Technology, I couldn't pass up the opportunity.

I remember thinking that this is right up my alley.  The applied business side of the degree will broaden my knowledge of how to operate a business which should come in handy in my current occupation working for the County of Maui.  The information technology side will enhance the things I've learned on the job working in the MIS Division.  I was determined to make this happen.

I submitted my application, went to the initial meeting and orientation and I was on my way.  Luckily, I was able to transfer credits I had already earned while attending Kapiolani Community College when I lived in Honolulu.  I didn't have to take many of the core classes over again.  This saved me considerable time and money.

I began by only taking two courses each semester to get myself started.  I even added a summer class.  I wanted to be able to speed it up so the following year I decided to add an extra class each semester.  Well I can finally say that I've been able to accomplish half of what I set out to do.  I've earned my Associates in Applied Science in Business Careers.  Now when I answer surveys and they ask me what level of education you've attained, I can now say a two year degree.

That leads me now to why I'm starting this blog.  I wanted to keep a diary of my experiences, my ups and downs, thoughts etc. while I go through my final journey toward my goal.  That is the BAS.  The four year degree.  I can see a small light at the end of the tunnel and with every step I take, and every class I put under my belt that light gets bigger and bigger.  Here's the kicker, though, it's getting harder and harder.  It requires more time and energy to complete the tasks needed for each class.  The expectations of the professor's are much higher.  I'm hoping I can do this, and I know deep down inside I know I can.  God give me the strength to do what I have to do.

Anyway, I'll keep everyone posted.
